Giving Back to the OSU Community

Several Greek philanthropic activities are directed at the OSU community.  In 1975, many sorority and fraternity members helped in the University Student Foundation Telethon which raised money for student internships and scholarships, counselling and tutoring programs, the library, and classroom equipment.   In 1974, the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority’ Beta Epsilon chapter won the Forward Award from the national organization for impovement in chapter operations and community relations.   The award turned into a scholarship for an OSU student.

An annual event that helps raise funds for scholarships, is the Delta Delta Delta Silver Offering Pancake Breakfast during Dad’s Weekend.  In 1977, the breakfast funded 30 scholarships for female students with the help of 1150 hungry dads.  Two scholarships were awarded to each school with ten designated for incoming freshmen.

Not all efforts go towards raising funds, sometimes the only goal is to show appreciation to other members of the OSU community.  In 1971, the Sigma Kappa sorority hosted professors, alumni, and parents for a traditional Swedish Christmas dinner, complete with decorations.  During that time, several fraternities and sororities would also come together to decorate the Memorial Union for an annual Christmas party for the children of students, faculty, and staff.
