“Shakespeare through the Ages at OSU,” Charlotte Headrick

Charlotte Headrick, a Theatre Arts Professor Emerita at Oregon State University, presented
this talk in celebration of more than a century of Shakespeare productions at OSU.
Delivered at the Valley Library, Headrick's lecture traces the history of Shakespeare
on the Corvallis campus and comments on early stagings, outdoor performances, occasional
controversies, and two seasons in particular that focused entirely on The Bard.

“Women at the Gymnasium: OAC Women's Athletics and Physical Education, 1880s-1940,” Ted Cox

Ted Cox, a local brewer, historian and former OSU women's volleyball coach, delivered
this talk in the Special Collections and Archives Research Center reading room as
part of SCARC's Collections at the Center lecture series. The presentation chronicled
women athletes' roles at Oregon Agricultural College from 1898 basketball champions
to 1930s play days, and traced the evolution of leaders in physical education for
women at OAC.

once every two years for outstanding achievement in an area of study once of interest

“Pioneers of Change: Black Football Players at OSU from 1951-Present”

This event paid posthumous tribute to the first African American football player at
OSU, Dave Mann (1951-1954), and also discussed the desegregation of football and what
that has meant for the Oregon State athletic program. Panelists included past OSU
football players Earnel Durden (1956-1958) and Ken Simonton (1998-2001); football
historian Dr. Michael Oriard; author Herman Brame; and sociologist Dr. Dwaine Plaza.
The event was sponsored by Oregon Humanities.

This event shared the untold story of the desegregation of the Oregon State men's
basketball team, circa 1965. The afternoon began with a presentation by Dr. Dwaine
Plaza and Natalia Fernández on the history of college basketball desegregation both
nationally and at OSU. The event also featured a discussion among panelists Norm Monroe,
Charlie White, Paul Valenti, Craig Robinson and Dr. Larry Griggs, as moderated by
Dr. Dawn Wright. Sponsored by the Association of Faculty for the Advancement of People
of Color, the Varsity O Club and the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs.

“My Father is a Book,” Janna Malamud Smith

Janna Malamud Smith, the daughter of famed novelist Bernard Malamud, read from two
of her works on the evening of November 9, 2007. The first reading, originally published
in Summer 2003, was an essay titled "My Father is a Book." Following this, Malamud
Smith read from a chapter of her 2006 memoir, also titled "My Father is a Book," before
taking questions from the audience.

On October 29-30, 2007 a two-day conference at Oregon State University's LaSells Stewart
Center was held to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the publication of Linus Pauling's
General Chemistry and the fiftieth anniversary of Linus and Ava Helen Pauling's first
public appeal for a ban on nuclear weapons testing. The theme of the conference was
"The Scientist as Educator and Public Citizen: Linus Pauling and His Era."

Arts in memory of Mrs. Pauling's multi-decade commitment to issues of peace and civil
liberties. In 1995, beginning with Dr. Chomsky's presentation, the Lectureship was

subject; friends and colleagues who knew Pauling personally; historians and archivists
who have studied scientists as the subject of contemporary scientific biography.
