Glimpses of An Election
"Not much me, Susan. Your afternoon visitors laid it on you, and they got on it as soon as they delivered the papers to the outlets. Mostly everybody's worried about you and the baby, and not wanting to give Warrener any excuses to upset you any more. You got to accept that, Susan. It's like being a good officer. You got to accept it. People trust you, count on you, you got to deliver. Othewise, go home and keep your mouth shut.
"It was your idea, and a great one. You got it going and so people count on you. Which means they care about you. You can't bitch about that, Susan."
"Yes, I learned about that this afternoon."
"Anyway, you made a big hit with Albert Case, and he said we could put the mimeo in his tool shed until we found a better place. Mitch and Run-Run are coming by tonight to pick it all up."
"Well, you...we...lucked out on that part of it. While you were doing the dishes I saw her come by the house all dressed-up and get in a car with two men and another woman. Big night out."
She stood up and walked over to Cat.
"I'm sorry I've been pouty. I'm still upset about it and I'm worn out. I'm going to bed, so you better come back and get the machine and the rest of the stuff where we put it after Mrs. Warrener's so-called visit."
She leaned down and kissed him. He followed her into the bedroom, got the materials, went back and kissed her firmly and turned out the light.
Shortly afterwards the transfer was made without incident and Cat promptly went to bed himself. Susan stirred, murmured and stayed asleep.
