Abstract

The Edward A. Stevens Papers consists of a travel diary, kept by Grace Stevens, documenting a trip taken by Edward and Grace Stevens. The 1926 trip, which was taken by car, stretched from Cambridge, Massachusetts to Portland, Oregon.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Edward Almeron Stevens was born in Truxton, New York, in 1884.  He attended Cornell and graduated with a law degree in 1909.  In 1912, he moved to Portland, Oregon, to work as traffic chief for the Eastern Oregon division of the Telephone Company, which he held until 1917.

He married his wife Grace Parrish Pierce in April 1915.  Grace passed away in May 1937.

In 1931, he started the crew program at Oregon State College as part of the physical education program, and served as the Head Coach until 1949.  He was a huge proponent of the program and built barges and shells, and added a training workshop along with the university crew program.

Edward married a second time to Irene LaDow Minkler in 1938.

He passed away March 9, 1957, at 72 years old.
