THE CHOATE SCHOOL WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT September 25th, 1946

Dear Sir:

  I am much interested in the report dated September 16th on the work of the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists.   It occurs to me that you may be able to recommend a man who would be a thoroughly good speaker for a meeting with some of our older boys here at Choate. 

  It is clearly a big part of our duty as a school to give our boys an initial insight into the possible uses of atomic energy and the problems of controlling it for right uses.   I am eager to have speak here a man who can speak with some authority on the scientific side and can at the same time take up,  perhaps briefly but definitely,  some of the political and spiritual issues involved in the control of atomic energy. 

  The audience would be a croup of boys from 15 to 18 years old,  plus members of the Faculty.  We might have a larger meeting,  of as many as 400 boys,  but I honestly think there would be more effective education in a meeting where boys could more easily ask questions. 

  You may be in touch with some member of the Faculty at Yale or Wesleyan who would have no problem of travel in coming to Choate.   I should be glad to have you suggest any name to me.   It is of real importance to have a man who is dynamic enough and human enough to speak well to a group of boys,  and I am interested most of all in a man who has a chief spiritual conviction on this whole subject.  It is only two hours from New York to Wallingford by train,  and it may be that the best man could come from New York. 

  I shall be most grateful for any help you can give me.
