history

governor ever has hope of winning without spending $40,000 or more. None! To run for governor, I must pledge dishonest conduct in office to the utility companies, liquor interests, or others; in order to obtain this campaign fund. A man, who will pledge to serve the highest paying client right or wrong, is called a lawyer; and he is the only one in our society qualified for the above conditions of office. The result is a government of lawyers, continuously grinding out legislation, now so complicated that not even they can determine legality. I recommend that your whole committee sit thru one term of court, to ascertain the moral status of lawyers, for it is they to whom the function of government inevitably falls. Now just who are the highest paying sponsors? The corporations. Just what interest do corporations serve with greatest profit? Militarism. By what means do armament makers and dealers profit? War. How is war made possible? By propaganda of distrust and hate. How comes this propaganda? By radio, print, textbooks and every other medium of publicity, none of which are owned or controlled by those who die in war. So much for lawyers! Now, whom must scholars serve? Governments or corporations. What branch of government? Military. Whom do his corporate employers serve? That government whose militarists pay best. My associates in 1933 offered services after preparation for research. Thru the General Aniline Corp. [Corps?] Hitler employed some men to promote science for his war machine, at his own price. So also thru the oil corporations. Others in despair operated elevators in N.Y.C. for General Electric at $15.00 per week, until somebody in their laboratories should die; later they supported our war machine. You, gentlemen, sit at the top of research; where I honor you. But you have served the wrong master, unconsciously, I believe. The undertone of remorse in your appeal indicates true repentance. Thru the faith I have found in my simple life, I earnestly pray that in the judgement you may not be accounted responsible for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki tragedies. But as for the present life which is not all-important, I believe that we are all in a measure responsible; and he that uses the sword, dies by the sword is inescapable. The militarists are trusting the natural and artificial caves for escape. Have you such a retreat?
