Legion Told Red Groups Recruit Spies
Washington, Nov. 20 (U.P) - The American Legion's "counter-subversive seminar" was told today that Communist front organizations are induction centers for "the recruiting of Kremlin spies."
The statement was made by Dr. J.B. Matthews, former chief investigator for the Dies Committee which preceded the present House Un-American Activities Committee.
Matthews told 75 Legion officials, gathered here from all parts of the country to receive training in methods of exposing and counteracting communism, that many "gullible" persons are inclined to laugh off Communist front groups.
"The cold fact is that the front organizations are used, among other things, for the recruiting of Kremlin spies" he said.
"Innocence is no longer to be cited as a valid excuse for giving aid and comfort to that foreign government which alone menaces the peace of the world."
