2. Mrs. M. B. Bingham

where my father was mayor & held many other offices. We were almost entirely from New England. Not one Catholic Cathedral, & not one Jewish Synagogue in the place. The only Catholic I knew was old Nora, 40 yrs a servant in my grandmother's family in Dexter, Michigan, near which place recently a general & leader of the White Russian forces in the revolution died. As to Jews I knew none at all & never met any. Such is my origin. We were republicans also [illegible], and followers of Lincoln, the great unionist. But I had a [bent?] for philosophy & when I left America I went to the land that had such writers, which was Germany. Still, still I must turn to them for [illegible] from a shattered world and its confusion. I have a little old book on poor paper called in English " Ideas towards the Philosophy of Human History" I read it in German And last night I read it again. It spoke of nature's laws
