THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY HOWARD L. BEVIS, President COLUMBUS
March 27, 1947
Dr. Albert Einstein, Chairman Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, Inc. 90 Nassau Street Princeton, N. J.
Dear Dr. Einstein:
I am a humble professor in a field, the Fine Arts, which is considered by many to be impractical. Nevertheless, even I am acutely conscious of the inherent dangers and consequent responsibilities resulting from the discovery of atomic power. The project of your committee, therefore, seems to me of the utmost importance. I am personally able to make only a relatively small contribution, for which I enclose a check, but by happenstance I am able to give you the names and addresses of a number of others who could make much greater contributions. I do not know to what extent you are already sacrificing your time to this cause, but if it would be possible for you to address a letter personally to the first four names on the attached list, I believe it might help greatly in the ultimate result. I am also acquainted with Mr. S. L. Avery of Montgomery- Ward, whose address I could also supply, but take it for granted that he has already been approached by your committee. The same is possible, of course, in the case of some of the others. I predict that your appeal will receive a tremendous response, although I am rather surprised that you have not offered a specific program of action, for that is certainly needed. But even the more limited objective - awakening people to the reality of the situation - is far better than mere drifting, for out of the awareness of peril may develop its solution.
In serious awareness of the importance of your project,
Sincerely yours, Frank Seiberling Jr.
Encl.
