December 3, 1947.
Dr. Albert Einstein, Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists, Princeton, N.J.
Dear Dr. Einstein:
I am enclosing a small gift out of my modest weekly income for the support of your work.
Frankly, I am terrified by what I see in the daily press - the possible discovery of a new atomic bomb, secret preparations in the Pacific and experimentation with atomic weapons, the program for an increased airforce, Russia now specifically name as our future opponent.
I am wondering what it is that you plan to do to offset this disastrous situation? How can a million dallars compete with the billions now being spent for military preparations?
It still seems to me that only a "strike" of the international brotherhood of scientists and researchers - a deliberate refusal of those who have the "know-how" to engage any longer in this orgy of destruction. If only the scientists would rise to the occasion, the common people all over the world would breathe a sigh of relief and rally their forces to support a program of peace.
In any case, I wish you all the success in the world in your campaign and hope to be able to add more to this small gift now enclosed.
Sincerely yours, Clarence F. Avey
