Susan Crist Oral History Interview
Description
In the interview, Susan Crist discusses the process she went through when she was deciding on which university she wanted to attend. After she narrowed it down to three great schools - all of which had exceptional golf teams - she decided on Oregon State University. She then talks about her parents' educational backgrounds and the family dynamic that evolved around a shared love of golf. She references her father's doubts in her ability to succeed in college based on the grades that she received in high school, and throughout the interview she mentions that her father's criticism served as motivation during the more difficult times in college.
The majority of Crist's interview revolves around fond memories of a rich and exciting undergraduate experience. From playing Division 1 golf to joining a sorority, Crist also spent time writing for The Barometer. In this, she found her passion for journalism and met some great professors who encouraged her to take on opportunities that she wouldn't have otherwise. She also references harder times when she struggled to meet her GPA requirements and decided to change majors. Once she learned how to manage her time more efficiently, she decided to quit the golf team, knowing that she would always play the game recreationally.
Wrapping up her interview, Crist talks about her current role working for the College of Business, her pride in being a Beaver, and her positive outlook the college's ability to shape the future of our workforce. She also offers insightful advice for those looking for work during their undergraduate years as well as soon-to-be graduates searching for jobs after college.
