Title

Marie Harvey Oral History Interview

Description

Harvey recounts what it was like growing up on a 25,000 acre ranch and how that influenced her work ethic and view of society in terms of gender. She describes what it was like transitioning from a small one-room schoolhouse to a larger middle school and a much larger high school. Attending college was a turning point in her life as she found her rebellious streak and experienced new cultures by studying abroad.

Upon graduation, she moved to Los Angeles and worked as a social worker for some time, and later at a university student health center. She also shares what it was like teaching a human sexuality course in the Biology department at Cal State - Fullerton. She then notes how her initial plans to attend medical school shifted when a colleague encouraged her to obtain a degree in public health as it focuses on prevention and access to resources. Dr. Harvey received her master's and doctorate degree in public health from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

From there, she moved back to Oregon and got a job as an assistant professor at the University of Oregon. Harvey discusses teaching at U of O for twenty years, serving as a department chair and director of research at the Center for the Study of Women and Society. She likewise discusses working part time at Oregon State University to help build the Department of Public Health, eventually transitioning to work full time at OSU, and contributing to OSU being accredited with the first school of public health in Oregon.

As the interview nears its conclusion, Harvey reflects on her time in California, noting that it positively influenced her career path and research interests. She also describes how her research on pregnancy and sexual behavior has evolved over the years to include the dynamic of couples and relationships. Lastly, she notes possible areas of change at OSU.
