Description
Originally from Germany, Schmittner came to Oregon State University in 2005 to research in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science as a climate modeler. His work on ocean and atmospheric modeling uses a variety of physical and biogeochemical inputs to better understand past and potential future global climates. He actively engages in public discourse on climate change to combat misinformation and help to educate people.
Schmittner describes his path from Germany to OSU. He recounts a family move to Tehran, Iran as a child and his early academic pursuits. He talks about working as a post-doctoral researcher in Canada following his PhD in Switzerland. Other highlights include his evolution as a teacher, discussions of biogeochemical cycles related to climate change, modeling the ocean and atmosphere together, and a broader discussion of climate change.
