As an alumnus of Oregon Agricultural College, Elvin Hoy made the most of his education and believed strongly in what OAC had to offer. Despite not remaining in Oregon, he never forgot the influence it had on his life and remained a staunch supporter of the institution and its programs. His interview begins with how his family came to reside in Portland, Oregon.
Hoy regales with anecdotes from his childhood, including his part in aiding his mother when she made rose beads. In terms of working with his father, as a boy helped him largely with gardening, but later the work turned to building houses. Other highlights of the interview include Hoy’s time as a student at OAC, his aptitude for mechanical engineering, and how he became involved with the school newspaper.
