Description
The Nonesuch Dickens, designed by Francis Meynell, limited to 877 sets. Each set is accompanied by one of the original steel plates or wood blocks made for Chapman & Hall's original editions of Dickens. The steel plate of "The breakdown", engraved by Phiz (H.K. Browne) for Pickwick papers, together with an extra printing from the plate, is issued in separate case with this set. "Published under the editorial direction of Arthur Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Walter Dexter and Thomas Hatton."
The text is taken chiefly from the "Charles Dickens" edition of Dicken's works published 1868-70, and the illustrations are printed from the original plates and blocks.

Volumes are printed on handmade rag paper specially made for this edition. It is bound in full linen, various colored buckram, with gilt stamped, black morocco-leather labels on spines, top edges gilt. The steel plate included with this set is entitled "The Young Ladies Young Gentleman:, engraved by H.K. browne ('Phiz") and numbered 161. It appears opposite p. 636 in the volume "Sketches by Boz", and is housed in its original custom made clamshell box with the binding uniform to the set, along with a letter of authenticity, signed by Arthur Waugh on Chapman and Hall letterhead.
