Abstract

The Computer Science Department Photographs Collection consists of photographs of department staff, faculty members, and graduate students.

Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection's images are primarily arranged chronologically.

Accession 97:111 consists of research reports for the 57th and 58th Annual Pacific Northwest Insect Management Conferences and the 72nd and 73rd Annual Western Orchard Pest and Disease Management Conference.

Biographical / Historical Notes

At Oregon State, Computer Science developed as a part of the Math and Electrical Engineering Departments until it became its own entity in 1972.

With the growth of mathematical study along the lines of applied analysis and statistics, Oregon State nurtured the development of computing.

OSU acquired a computer in 1957, which was also the first computer at an Oregon school.  Mathematics operated the computer while electrical engineering maintained the machine.

Due to the importance of computers and computing in the mathematics department, and the granting of seven PhDs in computer sciences from 1963-1966, which made Oregon State one of the top programs in the country.  The Computer Center was completed in 1970.  This growth in the field prompted the work to start a new Department of ComputerScience, which was officially established in 1972.
