The Harold L. Manley Collection consists of lecture notes and problem sets from mathematics and engineering classes that Manley took at Oregon State College in 1939-1940 as well as several mathematics and engineering textbooks. Of particular interest are lecture notes from a numerical calculus class taught by W.E. Milne and a 1949 textbook by Milne, Numerical Calculus.
These materials were donated to the Archives by Manley's son, Steven L. Manley in 2000.
Alumnus Harold L. (Hal) Manley entered Oregon State College in January 1938 and graduated in June 1940 with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He worked briefly for the National Bureau of Standards after graduation and served in the US Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. In 1946, he became a State Registered Civil Engineer in California; shortly thereafter he began working for the Department of Building and Safety of the City of Los Angeles where he remained until his retirement in 1975.
Additional biographical information for Manley is available in the Archives' central files for this collection. The W.E. Milne Collection includes other mathematical publications by Milne and the Mathematics Department Records (RG136) include Milne's general correspondence from the 1930s.
