The Ray S. Hewitt Collection consists of a book, Engines and the Engineman: The Human Side of Railroading, written by Hewitt. A limited number of copies were printed and distributed after his death. The book is a compilation of the experiences of a Southern Pacific engineer, Steve Woodson, whom Hewitt befriended in the mid-1970s.
OSU faculty member, Ray S. Hewitt was a professor of English from 1953 until his retirement in 1978. Railroading and train travel were his life-long hobbies and he authored various magazine articles on railroading.
Other materials pertaining to Hewitt are available in the Memorabilia Collection (MC-Hewitt, Ray S.) and the News and Communications Services biographical files (RG 203).
