Scope and Content Note
Ledger book consists of the organization's constitutions, by-laws,
rules of order, membership lists, and meeting minutes (1872-1880).
A certificate of membership in the Young America Engine Co. No.
1 of the Corvallis Fire Department is also included in the collection.
Minutes describe the various activities that the company engaged
in. Arranged chronologically.
Provenance
Records were transferred from the Memorabilia Collection to the
Manuscripts Collection in July 1991.
Conservation Note
Because of the fragile condition of the ledger, a preservation photocopy
on acid-free paper has been made. Any photocopies requested by
patrons will be made from the preservation photocopy.
Historical Note
The Corvallis Engine Company No. 1 was established on June 18,
1872 at a meeting at Fisher's Hall. The name of the company was
changed later that year to Young America Engine Company No. 1.
The organization appears to have had a social and benevolent function
in addition to its fire fighting duties.
