Scope and Content Note
Military service records from the War Department's Adjutant General's
Office include correspondence and orders dealing with promotions,
leaves and duty assignments; medical records; and the proceedings
of his retirement board. These records are from the National Archives
Record Group 94: Records of the Adjutant General's Office; Appointment,
Commission, and Personnel Branch; Letters Received #64 ACP 1872
for Lt. Benjamin Boswell.
Provenance
Microfilm purchased in 1980 by the Oregon State University Archives
to be used by Kenneth Munford in research on Boswell. Munford
subsequently donated the microfilm to the OSU archives in 1984.
The film has been transferred from the Memorabilia Collection
to the Manuscript Collections.
Biographical Note
Benjamin D. Boswell was the first professor of military science
at the Corvallis State Agricultural College and the first active-duty
Army officer to be assigned military instructor at a college in
the far western states. He was born in Indiana on 10 September
1837 and served during the Civil War and afterwards in the Regular
Army. He came to Corvallis in 1873 and served as professor until
1876. He was proprietor of the Boswell Springs resort (Douglas
County) for 12-14 years prior to his death in 1907.
